HELLO FROM MRS. HERING MAY 25-29

May 25th, 2009 by mrshering

This past week we learned how God changed Saul’s life. He captured Christians and put them in jail. God wanted Saul to change so He spoke to Saul as he was going to Damascus to harm more Christians. God changed Saul’s heart and he was baptized. He changed his name to Paul and changed his life. Now he worked for God and helped people to be Christians. He traveled as a missionary and God blessed his work. We also celebrated Ascension. Jesus’s instruction to His disciples before He ascended is for us also. We can tell the Good News to our family and friends.

In Math we practiced subtracting facts, subtracted two digit numbers and did a special Memorial Day practice page. Our Language Arts story was about celebrating a birthday for a ninety year old aunt. Creating memories with our families is so important. We learned how special all out family members are. We continued our vowel study with the long i words. The field trip to the museum was very interesting and fun.

HELLO FROM MRS. HERING MAY 18-22

May 17th, 2009 by mrshering

We continued our Bible lessons about prayer by reviewing the Lord’s prayer and what the words from Jesus really mean. Our heavenly Father loves us so much and wants to provide all good things for us. We can come to Him in prayer any time and place. We heard the story of the two men who prayed in the temple. We want to be like the humble man who was sorry for his sins. He knew God would forgive him. We also heard the account of the poor widow who gave all her money to God. It was only two coins, but she was a cheerful giver. We want to remember to cheerfully bring our offerings too.

In Math class we worked on the difference of one facts, polygons, the subtracting two facts, and identifying and counting quarters. The vowel of the week was the long e. Our language arts story was about being a true blue friend and helping others. We have been enjoying our new author Peggy Parrish and her delightful chapter book Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.

HELLO FROM MRS. HERING MAY 11 - 15

May 10th, 2009 by mrshering

This past week we celebrated National Day of Prayer. Our Bible lessons showed us people who had great faith and prayed to Jesus. A Canaanite woman’s daughter was very sick. She had great faith that Jesus could heal her. She kept asking and Jesus answered her prayer with a yes. She was very thankful to Him.  Ten lepers also asked to be healed and Jesus did heal them. Only one returned to thank Him. We prayed many different kinds of prayers this week. We know that our Lord heard them all. We can come to Him in prayer anytime of the day and He will always hear us.

In Math we practiced graphing, measured in centimeters, identified cubes and cylinders, and practiced new math facts. We began our lessons about the long A vowel. Our Language Arts story took place in South America. It was fun to see and read about different customs.

HELLO FROM MRS. HERING MAY 4-8

May 3rd, 2009 by mrshering

Our Bible stories this past week were about forgiveness and living our lives according to God’s commandments. While Jesus was at the home of friends a sinful woman came to him and was sorry for her sins. Jesus forgave her. Zacchaeus also led a sinful life, but Jesus showed him love and forgiveness. Both of these people are good examples for us. We also sin daily, but Jesus gives us forgiveness and salvation. He asks us to turn from our sinful habits and follow in His footsteps.

In Math we worked hard on our new math facts, practiced estimation, and learned to count coin combinations. We finished our practice of the short u vowel and enjoyed our language arts story about an imaginary friend. We liked the parachute and aerobic activities in gym.

HELLO FROM MRS. HERING

April 26th, 2009 by mrshering

This past week we studied two parables  that Jesus told. A parable is an earthly story with a Heavenly meaning. We learn from these stories how God wants us to live our lives according to His commandments. Through the story of two sons who were told to work in their father’s vineyard we heard about having a conscience. Listening to that voice of God helps us know the difference between right and wrong.  The story of the good Samaratan teaches us to love and pray for all people. With God’s help we can forgive and show kindness even when it is difficult.

We began practicing the short u vowel and enjoyed the book Little Bunny’s Lunch. We will continue this vowel and make our own Bunny book. Our Language Arts story was about using  imagination to paint pictures. We liked the story and painted our own pictures.

We did achievement tests every day. It was a a lot of thinking but all did well.

April 19th, 2009 by mrshering

Our Bible stories this week included The Resurrection  and Jesus appearing to Thomas. We learned about many Easter symbols such as the butterfly, lilly, and the egg. All of these teach us about things showing new life after seeming to be dead. Jesus gives us new life through His resurrection. We are trusting Him to bring us to Heaven for our new life.

In math we  learned about geometric solids, paper money, and adding three single digits. Our language arts story was about using our imagination. What do you have in your “attic”? We concluded our practice of the short o vowel and we enjoyed singing our vowel song.

HELLO FROM MRS. HERING APRIL 13-17

April 13th, 2009 by mrshering

I hope you all had a blessed and joyful Easter celebration. What great love the Father has for us.  We watched a wonderful Easter movie this past week, along with enjoying several books about Holy Week. It was a blessing to attend the Maundy Thursday service together and hear again of God’s great love to us through His Son. We enjoyed coloring Easter eggs and making Easter baskets, too.

Mrs. Kelm visited us again with her interesting art. We tried copying the artist on our own drawing paper. That was hard but fun.

Our new vowel is short o. We will continue practicing that this week. The new math facts are called oddball because they do not fit into a family of facts, but still are important to learn. They are difficult to memorize we found out, so we will continue to work on them until they are mastered.

HELLO FROM MRS. HERING APRIL 6 - 9

April 4th, 2009 by mrshering

This past week we continued our Lenten studies with the trials of Jesus. He had to appear before Caiaphus and was accused of being a blasphemer because He said He was the Son of God. Even though Jesus had done nothing wrong He was sent to Pontius Pilate for punishment. Pilate found Jesus to be innocent but he did not want to displease the crowd of people. He punished Jesus by whipping him and making fun of him. The people even chose to have a criminal released instead of Jesus.  Jesus willingly took this punishment in our place so that we could be forgiven. We also heard about Peter’s denial. We were reminded that we do not want to deny Jesus with our words and actions. Peter was forgiven and we too can be forgiven for all our sins.

In Math we learned about fractions, comparison symbols, dividing a set, and capacity.

We enjoyed the play performed by Theater for Young Audiences and going to Trading Post for AR.  Good job to all the students who finished their reading for Book It.  You will be rewarded with a pizza lunch on Tuesday, April 7.

HELLO FROM MRS. HERING MARCH 30 - APRIL 3

March 29th, 2009 by mrshering

Our Lenten lessons continued this past week with Judas betraying Jesus. His love of money tempted him to forget his love for Jesus. We were reminded to always put Jesus first in our lives. Jesus gave us a great example the night that He was betrayed when he showed love to one of his enemies. Peter cut off the ear of one of the soldiers and Jesus picked it up and healed the man. We learned it is right to forgive our enemies. We can pray for God’s help when this is not easy for us to do.

In Math class we practiced identifying a dozen and half dozen, measuring in feet, and the new subtracting from 10 facts.

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with special stories and projects. Some children thought they saw a leprechaun in our room  :)  We continued with stories and a video about Curious George and each of the children made a monkey that looks a lot like George. We began our next short vowel work with our book Will Bill? Can you guess the vowel?

I hope everyone enjoyed the Spring Break and are now ready to get back to learning more new things in First Grade.
